Home Sustainability for Businesses - Green Building Green Building for Businesses Green Building Green building is the practice of using construction processes and structures that are resource-efficient and environmentally responsible throughout the building's life cycle. This approach encompasses several key principles including sustainable site selection and development, efficient use of resources, energy efficiency and water conservation. By integrating these principles, green building aims to create structures that not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance the health and well-being of occupants, contributing to a more sustainable future. CALGreen CalGreen refers to the green building standards that are part of the California Building Code. Every building permit is required to meet the applicable green building standards. CalGreen is updated every 3 years with new best-management practices and regulations that would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California. The incorporation of green spaces and trees into the built urban infrastructure can provide shade and reduce surface temperatures. Cool surfaces are another method to reduce urban heat island effects. This concept refers to paving materials that reflect more solar energy, enhance water evaporation, or have been otherwise modified to remain cooler than conventional pavements. Conventional paving materials can reach peak summertime temperatures of 120 to 150°F, transferring excess heat to the air above them and heating stormwater as it runs off the pavement into local waterways. U.S Green Building Council (USGBC) Individual memberships with the USGBC are available for those interested in getting involved at the local community level. This membership can support the mission of USGBC to lead, educate, engage and empower communities to promote green building. Individual memberships offer access to insider email newsletters, exclusive event discounts, local networking and engagement, and recognition in the USGBC member directory.
