Find a Lost Pet In addition to Orange County Animal Care’s lost pet webpage, descriptions and picture of found pets are posted on PetHarbor. To search for a lost pet (or to look for a pet to adopt), simply type in the city or ZIP code where you lost your pet and select all or a few of the local shelters. After answering a few questions about your lost pet, PetHarbor will provide you with pictures and descriptions of animals found in the area. Tips for Finding a Lost Pet: Search the area thoroughly. Call local animal shelters, veterinarians, and pet supply stores. Visit local animal shelters and check local websites. Post flyers and place ads in local newspapers. Be safe. Do not include your name and address on flyers. Do not respond to "found pet" ads alone. Don't give up! Pets have been known to find their way back home after being lost. Tips to Protect Your Pet Fence your yard and check it regularly for escape routes. Leash your pets at all times. Keep a collar on your pet that has an ID and current rabies tag. Transport your pet in a carrier. Consider a microchip implant. Get some good photos of your pet. Both males and females will be less likely to wander if they are spayed or neutered. An added benefit is that they will live a longer, happier, healthier life. Dog Obedience Classes Dog obedience classes solve behavior problems such as biting, jumping, barking, chewing, and digging. The goal is to turn the unruly pet into an enjoyable, well-mannered companion and a longtime member of the family. The City offers Dog Obedience classes for dogs at least four months old. These classes are advertised in the City’s Leaflet Recreation Guide, which can be found here. Do not bring your dog to the first class. Owner must provide proof of vaccinations, training collar, and leash. Owners of dogs adopted from the Orange County Animal Care Center within the previous six months of the class will receive a 25 percent discount on the registration fee. Pet Disaster Preparedness Preparation is the best strategy for ensuring safety for your family during a disaster. Don't forget to include your pets in your plans. Here are a few steps you can take to prepare to care for your pets during an emergency: Take your pets with you. If it is unsafe for you, it is unsafe for your pet. Remember that, depending on the emergency, you may not be allowed to return home for a period of time. Find a safe place. Evacuation shelters may not accept pets (with the possible exception of service animals). Make arrangements ahead of time to ensure your pet has a safe place to stay. Remember identification tags. Your pet should always be wearing identification. An identification tag may be your pet's ticket home. Visit your veterinarian to have your pet microchipped. Have a plan in case you are not home. Make arrangements for a friend or neighbor to evacuate your pets. Make sure they have your work and cell phone numbers. Know where local shelters are located. Should your pet become lost, start with the Orange County (OC) Animal Care Center. However, area shelters may become overburdened and may rely on a network of shelter options. Assemble a portable pet disaster kit. Your pets depend on you. Be prepared. Spaying/Neutering Controlling Pet Overpopulation Spaying or neutering is one of the greatest gifts you can give your pet. In addition to helping control pet overpopulation, the procedure may also prevent medical and behavioral problems from developing, allowing your pet to lead a longer, healthier, happier life. The City has partnered with local veterinarians to offset the cost of the procedure. If your pet is not spayed or neutered, the City will provide a $50 voucher to complete the procedure at a participating clinic. Spayed and neutered pets are better, more affectionate companions. Spaying or neutering does not affect a dog's instincts to protect its home and family. Operations are simple and pets can sometimes go home the same day. A number of vet clinics in Lake Forest offer low-cost spaying and neutering. Spayed and neutered pets are eligible for discounted license fees.
